Ruined For Life

My buck fever started Christmas day 2010 as my friend Jared and I got notes saying we were going mule deer hunting in Alberta Canada in Nov. 2012 Thanksgiving week. My dad and Jared’s dad have been hunting there several times with the same outfitter. He wanted to treat us to our first mule deer hunt for free. I already knew I would like this guy, and the two years went by really slow. 2010 treated our dads and their friend Nate Hamilton with 3 great mule deer and 2 whitetails. Nate’s mule buck scored 194” and Dave shot a great whitetail buck. The weather was really cold that year, it got down to -44 degrees F and I was a little worried about that.

Thanksgiving week, 2012, will always hold great memories for me. I was lucky enough to get to go to Alberta, Canada with my dad, Dave, my friend Tyler Pallas and his dad, Bear. Dad and Bear had been to this particular area a few times, and had harvested some monster bucks over the years. Their outfitter always said when your boys are old enough to play cards, bring them on up to hunt. It took our Dads a few years to muster the strength to take us!!!

Fly Fishing Camp

Essays have never been my thing. Sure, I can write a passable essay on any given topic to dazzle a teacher or two, but essays are not my favorite. That is until my dad showed me an ad in the Fly Fishing & Tying Journal encouraging me to write my nemesis, the dreaded essay. They wanted to know why I would want to go to The Fly Shop’s Fish Camp on their dime. I checked out the website that showed all the camp’s information and decided it looked great and was worth a try. I had never fly fished before but last year I had started my new hobby of tying flies. My grandfather had seen my interest in his old hobby and passed down to me all of his old tying supplies and, I was hooked! (Pardon the pun)
